Year 4:- DHO Posting

This module is designed to create awareness among students on the importance of participating in and contributing to the success of national health programmes. Students are introduced to relevant health programmes at the national, state and district levels and to experience first‐hand how the public health system works on the ground. Students will be posted to the District Health Office (DHO) for a period of two weeks. Each day the students will observe one area of activity of the health office. Students are expected to interact with the concerned health personnel and get information on their training and job responsibilities.

  • They should accompany the personnel in the office and to the community and observe how they interact with the community and perform the various task that are given; observe critically the mode of data collection, the records that are maintained, the method of compilation and analysis the report generated.
  • They should elicit the methods of data verification, quality standards followed and achieved; and critically review some of the reports. There will be visits to the following places of the public health importance:
  1. Water purification and treatment plant
  2. Sewage treatment plant/ oxidation pond
  3. Food quality control laboratory
  4. Industrial sites
  5. Home for the elderly
  6. home for the mentally challenged
On the other hand, students are required to write a report on the areas of public health importance listed below.

  • Flowchart on the health care delivery system with special emphasis on public health programmes
  • Disease control activities
  • Disease surveillance
  • Occupational health practices
  • Water purification
  • Sewage and solid waste disposal
  • Food quality control
  • Health promotion
